We are one week into the new year and resolutions are still fresh. Capitalize on the blank slate that 2019 brings and intentionally plan to attain your goals. You may have a goal in mind but feel unsure about how to move forward, if so these tips will help move your dreams into action!
1. Determine your final destination. Some people make vague goals for themselves, such as going back to school or wanting to become an entrepreneur, however they have not taken the time to think about what success looks like to them. Meet Lisa, a fictitious friend who enjoys cooking and wants to start her own business. She should decide what her long term goal is and then map out a plan to get from A to Z. You will not reach your goal overnight and therefore you should anticipate that you will meet roadblocks. It is okay to modify your goal over time. Do not lock yourself into unrealistic goals. For example, Lisa determines that her long term goal is to open a restaurant in NYC and makes a five year plan that includes taking some business classes, researching franchise opportunities versus independently owned businesses and the cost of rental and purchased property in the location of her choice. It is advisable to do your research and make detailed plans that have established check points along the way to keep you on task.
2. Be open to changing lanes and observe your surroundings. As you are deciding which goal you want to achieve, carefully plan the steps to reach that goal and make sure you are honest with yourself. Be sure that your goal is attainable and that you choose a path that will set you up for success. Its okay to change lanes along the path to your goal. Modifying a goal is not synonymous with failure- its called improvising! Keep your eyes open and learn from people around you as you strive to get to the finish line.
3. Pace yourself and choose an alternate route if necessary. 80% of people fail their New Year Resolution by February. You want to hit the ground running but this is a marathon and not a race. It is important to enjoy the scenery on the 'drive' to your new goal. Listen to your body and make time to refuel and rest while you grind to meet success. Reflect on your process frequently, which will help you determine if you need to abort mission. You are the driver and are in control. You can decide to take an alternate route or to change the destination at any time.
